Unsafe Campus: Phone Snatching becoming common at Government Medical College Amritsar

An unknown miscreant tried to snatch a female medical student’s mobile phone on the medical college premises

Amritsar: Frequent snatching incidents have raised safety concerns at Government Medical College Amritsar ( (GMC, Amritsar). The students have complained that one of the reasons for these crimes is the unavailability of CCTV cameras from the campus hostel to medical college’s clinical institute, Guru Nanak Dev Hospital.

In a recently reported incident, an unknown miscreant tried to snatch a female medical student’s mobile phone on the medical college premises. The student was returning to her hostel after completing her duty time at the hospital. However, the miscreant’s attempt went futile due to the alertness of the medico.

The medical students pointed out that the roads from the campus to the medical college hostel wear the deserted look once the sun goes down in winters. Due to this reason, it has become easier for looters to attempt these crimes on students who pass through these roads alone at that duration.

According to a recent report by Tribune, this was the second such incident reported from the medical college in the past two weeks.

    No CCTVs

The majority of medicos have complained that there are no cameras on the road from the hospital to hostels. “The availability of cameras will be a deterrent to criminals as the possibility of them being identified will keep them at bay,” a student pointed out to the daily Tribune.

The students urged that the campus should be made secure as they often had to walk alone to their duty point and return to hostels.

We are taking apt measures- Medical College Authorities

The medical college authorities have claimed that they are taking effective measures to prevent any unsafe activities at the campus. They stated that every effort was being made to ensure the safety of students, employees as well as attendants and patient.

Medical Superintendent Dr Surinder Paul told Tribune that ample efforts would be made to ensure the safety of people during late evening hours. He added that the hospital staff and interns were working tirelessly and it was the hospital’s duty to ensure their safety.

“Being a public institution, we cannot restrict the entry even during the night but guards are alert and have been asked to keep an eye on suspicious elements,” an official said.
