Unfortunate: First-year MBBS student commits suicide over Semester Exam Stress

JHANSI: Stressed over poor performance in semester exams, a first-year MBBS student committed suicide at Jhansi medical College by jumping off the fifth floor of an under-construction super-speciality block of the college. The 19-year-old medico of Jhansi Medical College ended her life within a fraction of seconds reportedly after informing her mother about the act.

The MBBS student, hailing from Kanpur was reportedly in tension and stress due to studies and the ongoing semester examinations.

The incident took place during the early hours of Tuesday morning. As per the college administration, the medico spoke to her mother over the phone around 5:30 am. She told her mother about her previous MBBS papers which she did not write well and the problems she was facing in her studies. The medico was pacified and was told by her mother to reappear for the exam.

However, deeply stressed over her poor performance, the medico stated that she would not take the exam afresh and was heading to end her life by jumping from the building. Right after expressing this, she disconnected the call.

Immediately, her mother alarmed the college warden. The warden hurried towards her hostel along with the guards. However, it was too late by then, as the medico had already jumped from the building.

She was rushed to the emergency by the juniors and the seniors around. Unfortunately, she was declared dead. Soon the cops were informed and the body was taken for autopsy.

Later in the afternoon, her parents arrived in college and told the authorities about the phone call.

The deceased was the only child of an IIT-Kanpur professor. A promising MBBS student, she had cleared IIT entrance as well as NEET entrance in the first attempt and had opted for medical.

“The body will be handed over to the family by late Tuesday evening after autopsy,” Jhansi SSP OP Singh told HT.

Expressing grief over the incident, Dr NS Senger, ex-principal of the medical college, told TOI, that the incident was shocking.
