Tamil Nadu to add 450 more MBBS seats
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu state is all set to add 450 MBBS seats to its current pool from this academic year.
Recently, the Union Health Ministry has granted its permission for setting up a new government medical college and hospital at Karur and commence MBBS course for 150 seats at the Institute for the academic year 2019-20. Other colleges in the state were collectively given 350 more MBBS seats.
The MBBS seats in the state were 2,447 last year and after addition of the said number of seats, the pool has reached to 2,897.

Dr A Edwin Joe, Director of Medical Education told the New Indian Express, "The state would add at least 350 MBBS seats this year. We have got approval to start a new medical college in Karur, and also we got approval to add 100 seats more each in Madurai Medical College Hospital and Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital. With this, the number of MBBS seats in both medical colleges increased from 150 to 250".
The IRT-Perundurai Medical College and Hospital was taken over by the State Health and Family Welfare Department got the approval of 100 MBBS seats in the college. The government medical colleges has also been in increased from 22 to 24.

A Senior Official in the Directorate of Medical Education informed the daily that "We will be inaugurating the new medical colleges in Karur soon, which was kept on hold due to model code of conduct for the elections. With take-over of IRT-Perundurai Medical College and Hospital and new medical college at Karur, the government medical colleges increased to 24."
Medical Dialogues had recently reported the Medical Council of India (MCI) has given its nod to add 100 more MBBS seats at the Tirunelveli Medical College for the academic year 2019-20.
