Tamil Nadu Medical College: Former Staff arrested for harassing female MBBS student

Chennai: The Chennai Police has arrested a former army man on the charges of harassing a female MBBS student attached to ESI Medical College and Hospital in KK Nagar, where he earlier used to work.

According to recent media accounts, the accused, identified as 45-year-old ex-army man, Ganesan, had been harassing the fourth-year MBBS student for months. The accused is reportedly married and has two sons.

The 21-year-old MBBS student lives in the hostel, where the former army staff used to work as a security guard.

As per the statement made by the police officials on the case, the accused had been working as a security guard in the hospital for the past five years. He had been keeping a close watch on the girl from the day she started her MBBS training at the hospital.

Throughout her MBBS training at the medical institute, the accused had tried to talk to the MBBS student numerous times, however, she ignored him. However, he didn’t stop and the situation shifted to the worse side when the accused started stalking and harassing her after she graduated to the third year. Still, harassing the student did not end at this point, the accused, early this year, also professed his love by sending a letter to the medico through courier, proposing marriage.

Distressed, the MBBS medico complained to the medical college Dean about the harassment, who immediately suspended the accused.

The News Minute reports that the accused had mentioned in the letter that he would come in person to discuss the proposal. He met the medico recently on Friday, November 23, however, the medico had already alerted the police about the meeting and the police arrested him under the charges of harassing the female student.

The police have registered a case under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women Harassment Act. The accused was later remanded to judicial custody.

During interrogation and further investigation on the case, police officials recovered the letter. They also found that the accused was ready to leave his wife and children. He had plans to rent a house soon after getting married to the MBBS student, adds TOI.
