SKIMS bags MCI recognition for 100 MBBS seats
Srinagar: The Bemina-based Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, (SKIMS) has finally bagged the recognition by the Medical Council of India (MCI) for its 100 MBBS seats.
Informing about the same, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the SKIMS said that the medical college which had been permitted to increase uptake of seats from 50 – 100 in 2013 have been recognized now by MCI. Now all the 100 sets stand recognized, he stated.
The MBBS quota of SKIMS Medical College was enhanced in 2013 from 50 to 100 seats but due to deficiencies pointed out by MCI recognition of these seats was awaited.
In the year 2015, the institute did get a negative nod by the MCI, on top, the regulatory body's recommendation for the reduction of the MBBS seats was sent to the Union Health Ministry. The suggestion came in view of the medical college's mismanagement and failure in rectifying even minor deficiencies in the medical college.

However, in the last two years, most of the deficiencies were addressed in a phased manner and MCI assessed the compliance of the institution with regard to the rectification of deficiencies pointed out in its previous inspections as the last inspection of the Medical College was held by Medical Council of India on May 11, 2019.
The compliance verification report (11.05.2019) along with the summary and observations of the member of the undergraduate expert group appointed by the Board of Governors in supersession of the MCI (MCI BoG) and vide letter no:MCI-37 (RECOG-14)9UG/2017-Med/ recommended to the Central Government for recognition and approval of Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar for award to MBBS degree granted by SKIMS against the increased intake from 50 to 100 seats u/s 11(2) of the IMC ACT, 1956, reports UNI.

The students, staff and social group highly appreciated the efforts of the Director and Principal of SKIMS Medical College, Bemina for their efforts assisted by the various members of the MCI cell of the two Institutions.
Director SKIMS expressed delight and said it is a great moment for all medical institutions in general and SKIMS in particular. He congratulated the Principal and appreciated all involved in the process including faculty. University and staff of SKIMS MCI cell for their valuable inputs and efforts over this great achievement. It will boost medical education further to a great level, he added.

Medical Dialogues had recently reported about SKIMS getting MCI nod for to increase 3 more seats in MCh Urology and also MCI recognition for Two seats in MS Orthopaedics Course. The medical college had got the MCI recognition for 3 MD Dermatology, 2 MD Psychiatry seats as well.
