Rims Ranchi first year medical students allegedly assaulted

Jharkhand: A disturbing incident has emerged from the campus of Rims Ranchi, where a first year medical student is reported to be in hospital after she was allegedly assaulted by her seniors. The reported incident took place in the girl’s hostel.

The 19-year old first year student, Puja Dey, was taken to the Rims emergency ward after she fainted. She was allegedly slapped by a group of four senior students following an argument. However, no media statement has been given by Puja as yet.

A first-year student implied in her statement that after being summoned to the senior girl’s hostel there was news in the hostel that Puja has fainted after suffering an assault. However, no one has been able to speak to Puja till now. It is being further suspected as a case of ragging.

Still, there is no official complaint filed in the matter. The anti-ragging cell at Rims has no received no complaint till now. Same is the case in the local police station. Rims director Dr BL Sherwal is also aware on the matter, even though no one has reported the matter officially to him, implying a complaint regarding the incident.

When contacted, Sherwal said to TOI that, "I had sent two professors to meet the student and visit the hostel premises. Primary findings do not point at ragging that led to the physical assault. The incident will be probed even if it's a physical assault."

Students have further revealed to the media that such incidents have been happening with the first year students. This is only one of the cases of ragging of first year students, some students have alleged.

Only in beginning of 2015, there was an incident reported in boys hostel, which left 7 students in injury following a physical assault. There was a huge tension in the campus at that time, even resulting in hampering of classes at that time. Later, the medical college management decided to install surveillance cameras in hostels. They also released the accused with an undertaking on the matter.
