Rare Surgery performed at Tanda Medical College
Kangra: In a rare surgery, a Left Carotid Body Tumor, grade III was removed at Dr Rajinder Prasad Government Medical College at Tanda this week from a patient hailing from Chamba district.
Dr Bhanu Awasthi, Principal Dr RP Government Medical College, Tanda told UNI that a 41 year old male patient, a native of district Chamba was admitted on March 16, in ENT department of the college with a globular swelling below the left angle of mandible and causing encasement of Internal Carotid artery and External Carotid Artery.
"The tumor was 5X6x6 cm size highly vascular and adherent to both carotid arteries. The patient did well post-operatively and there are no complications. The Carotid Body Tumor (CBT) is a rare and highly vascular para-ganglioma of head and neck region. It is a benign tumor seen in people of high altitude and treatment of choice is surgical excision", Dr Awasthi said.

While congratulating the team led by Dr Sudesh Kumar from the Department of ENT and Dr Shyam Bhandari from the department of Anesthesia, Dr Awasthi said that conducting such a rare surgical procedures not only motivate medical professionals in delivering their best but also act as source of inspiration to future doctors.
The importance of the surgery lay in the fact that despite being a group 3 tumor with encasement of vessels, excision was performed without resection of carotid thereby helping patient live a normal life after surgery, he added.
