Ranchi: RIMS under MCI lens for renewal of 60 MBBS seats

Ranchi: RIMS under MCI lens for renewal of 60 MBBS seats
Jharkhand: MCI inspection team is reported to have found certain discrepancies with the compliance measures at RIMS (Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences). The matter is regarding the renewal of 60 MBBS seats at the institute for the new academic session.

However, the college administration is now under the direct lens of MCI inspection team for its noted deficiencies. The three-member MCI team, comprising doctors from Assam and Karnataka, will submit a report on its findings.

Basis this reports only a final decision arriving at renewal of 60 seats will take precedence. As earlier, these 60 seats were granted to the college provisionally in 2015. Now, a final response is awaited on the matter.

Back in 2015, a provisional certificate was granted against a compliance undertaking by the state government for an allotment of one year tenure. The requirement for the institute at present is to hire more faculty and support staff, and improve the academic infrastructure. Failing which, it will not be able to retain 60 seats.

As reported by TOI, the team inspected the academic block, including classrooms, common rooms, records room and the library. Sources said the team members - Dr V K Das, Dr P Lakshmi Narayan and Dr M C Chandru - had "certain objections" after conducting a thorough inspection. "There were no audio systems in the classrooms. The common rooms were small and poorly maintained The team raised objections about the temporary partitions constructed for building new classrooms," sources said.

The inspection team then did the rounds of the hospital block and visited the operation theatres, intensive care units and general wards of various departments. The MCI headquarters will hand over its final report to Rims management soon.

Rims director Dr BL Sherwal has implied on the matter that overall MCI seems satisfied on the progress made by the institute. There are only minor issues which need attention in terms of physical infrastructure. Still, the shortage of faculty is a matter of concern. We are hopeful of filling up the remaining positions soon.
