Punjab: Parents join protest at Gian Sagar Medical College

Punjab: In the continued row between the faculty members and the management of Gian Sagar medical college and hospital, over the issue of non-payment of salary, the matter only got escalated with the parents of the students at the college now demanding that their children be accommodated in some other college.

Their appeal to shift the students to a government college comes amidst a brewing crisis in the medical college. Only recently the state High Court has directed the college to pay the staff members by April 30, and sort the matter out. The classes have been suspended till then.

Parents are a worry lot as the final exam of the first year MBBS students is approaching-scheduled in May or June. The situation gets only escalated by the fact that Raj Bahadur, vice-chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, which conducts the medical exams, has commented that only students with the compulsory 75% attendance will be allowed to take the exam.

As reported by Tribune, the parents today met the management asking it to get the classes resumed and also ensure that students are provided good facilities at hostels. However, the management in turn directed the teachers to either resume their duty tomorrow or threatened them of being termination.Following the threat, students, parents and staff members blocked the traffic on the road. This is not the first time that the authorities have failed to disburse the salaries of staff for months together. There have been protests in the past also in this regard and the staff have been completely boycotting working causing inconvenience to patients.

As reported by HT, more than 200 students of the college surrounded chief minister Parkash Singh Badal’s aide Harcharan Bains on Tuesday when he visited the campus to enquire about the health of actor Satish Kaul. The students were demanding the CM’s intervention to resume classes. The students are also learnt to have sent a letter to the Union human resource ministry and the Medical Council of India to apprise them of the situation.
