Rajkot: The dean of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya (PDU) Medical College, Rajkot was transferred to Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS) Dharpur Medical College in Patan last week by the Health and Family Welfare department. The transfer is said to have come into development after a rape allegation was filed against a senior resident doctor by a junior colleague.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that last week a 28-year-old resident doctor was arrested for allegedly raping his junior colleague at a government medical college here in Gujarat after a 24-year-old junior colleague lodged a complaint against him.
The woman initially complained about the incident to the medical college’s dean, who suspended the accused for one term, the police had informed
The Dean, Dr Yogeshanand Goswami, held a meeting with the senior faculty of the campus regarding the incident. Meanwhile, the government called for his transfer.
While the government has termed it a regular transfer, according to the doctors at the medical college, the dean has nothing to do with the incident; he is just being made a scapegoat. Dr Goswami has served as a dean for two institutions- GMERS Junagadh and Rajkot Civil Hospital, for the last 27 years.
Speaking about his transfer, Dr Goswami told the Mirror, “I have to do what the government asks me to. So I will go to serve at my new position in Patan.”
Since the incident, night shifts for female residents have been suspended at the hospital. Dr Goswami had issued the verbal order regarding the security concerns, stating, “Yes, I did ask female residents not to serve night shifts and informed all HODs about the same. I have asked them to serve only during the days till security is increased at the hospital. I have spoken to Dr Mehta about the same.”
