Osmania Medical College: After HOD, Junior Assistant arrested from taking bribe from MD Medicine Student

Hyderabad: The investigation into the bribery case at the popular Osmania Medical College, has led to another arrest of a medical college staff member for collecting bribe from medical students to pass them in the internal examinations.

According to recent media reports, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has now held Junior Assistant at the Institute for taking bribe from Post Graduate (MD) General Medicine student.

Over two weeks ago, Medical Dialogues had reported about the arrest of Osmania's Senior Professor and Head of Department (HOD) for General Medicine. The doctor had been arrested and remanded to judicial custody on account of allegedly collecting Rs 75,000 as bribe from medical students to pass them in the internal examination. The professor had also been charged for amassing illegal assets.

Earlier, a case of criminal misconduct was registered against them in Cr No 11/2019 u/s 7,13(1)(d) r/w 12(2) of P.C. Act, 1988 and 7 (a) of IPC Act (as amended in 2018) respectively at City Range-2, Hyderabad for collecting Rs 1.6 lakh in May 2018 and Rs 1.5 lakh in March 2019 from the Post Graduate (MD) General Medicine students as a bribe.

ACB officials had earlier informed about the complaint filed by the students against the accused which has led to the investigation and the subsequent arrests. It had been stated that the professor told a few medicos that their exams did not go well and they are at risk of failing in the examination. Next day when the students met him, he took their hall tickets and contact numbers and told them that he is taking a risk to pass them in exams for which he demanded Rs 50,000 from each student.

He forwarded a photograph of a cheque in the name of one Srinu’s account name through WhatsApp to students and asked them to send a screenshot of the transaction to his WhatsApp number. On the same day, students transferred an amount of Rs.75,000 to the said account through Tez/Google Pay. The students transferred the money and also lodged a complaint with the ACB

Following their complaint, the ACB registered a case after preliminary enquiry and searches were conducted at the office and residence of the professor where they found documents showing the collection of money from medical college students and sale and purchase of properties in his name and family members.

UNI reports about the recent statement released by the ACB which states that the accused officers performed their duties improperly and dishonestly to obtain an undue advantage. "The Accused Officer Dr Bhukya Balaji, was already arrested in the case on April 5. Another Accused Officer Khaja Ahmeduddin was arrested on Saturday and was being produced before the Principal Special Judge for SPE and ACB cases," added the ACB statement.

Accused Officer Ahmeduddin had reportedly helped HoD Dr Balaji in his offences.“We have successfully established Ahmeduddin’s role in the incident,” officials informed TNIE.
