Cuttack: The SCB Medical College,Cuttack which had been granted a 100 seat approval in 2013 and which the Medical Council of India(MCI), had in 2016, counseled the centre to refrain from granting, due to deficiencies & infrastructural shortcomings, has once again found renewal. The earlier seat enhancement from 150 to 250 seats is again back in place.
An MCI communication has renewed seat approval, also granted approval for renewal of admission for the 5th MBBS batch with increased intake for the academic session 2017-18.
Sources state that the MBBS seat enhancement from 150 to 250 in 2013 had led to 250 students getting admission in the college in 2013,2014, 2015 and 2016. However last year, the Council after an inspection had advised the centre to refrain from renewing sanction of additional 100 MBBS seats to the college, granted four years earlier.
The apex education regulator after sanctioning a seat hike to a college is meant to inspect the college’s capability to handle this increase, for the next five years. In the case of the SCB Medical College, the MCI on inspection had brought to light certain deficiencies including those of infrastructure. It had also mentioned the hospital superintendent lacking in terms of years of experience.
The SCB Medical college after compliance of deficiencies again approached the Council with the demand for renewal of permission in writing, which was granted, reports the Indian Express.
