    NO MBBS Course nod to Medical colleges without Emergency Department: MCI BOG

    New Delhi: The Medical Council Of India (MCI) Board of Governors (MCI) has given its nod to series of measures to ensure that all medical colleges in the country have proper Emergency Departments in place.

    The measures call for all medical colleges to have fully functional Emergency Departments as per the MCI norms by 31 March 2022 adding that all new medical colleges seeking LOP w.e.f 2021-22 MBBS batch should ensure that a fully functional Emergency Department is in existence as per the MCI norms


    The proposal to these effect was recently brought before the apex medical college. The BoG considered the proposal to ensure Emergency Departments in all Medical Colleges which included the following

    • Considering the huge burden of the emergency/accident cases, there is an urgent need to scale-up the quality of Emergency and Accident services, with a focus on its quality training both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levelsin structured manner at all medical colleges in the country.

    • The MCl has already set guidelines for the establishment of Emergency Department for conducting postgraduate courses in this specialty.

    • A structured fully functional Emergency Department as specified in the MCl guidelines must be made available at all medical colleges in a phased manner such that All medical colleges in the country (Govt and Private) have a fully functional Emergency Departments as per the MCI norms by 31 March 2022.

    • All new medical colleges seeking LOP w.e.f 2021-22 MBBS batch should ensure that a fully functional Emergency Department is in existence as per the MCI norms.:


    The BoG considered and approved the proposal in principle and directed the Council office to put up a detailed formal proposal for consideration of the BoG.

    Emergency medicine is gaining momentum across the globe and advancements have been made in identifying and treating life-threatening conditions arising out of natural disasters, accidents, epidemics and other related events.

    The need for strengthening emergency care has been repeatedly highlighted by policymakers in recent times. The Vice president of India also recently stressed on the need to include Emergency medicine and trauma care in the curriculum of Undergraduate courses to train medical students to deal with a whole gamut of situations relating to emergency medicine, recently
