NEET Age limit to stay in 2018: SC refuses to intefere
New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has kept from intervening in a group of petitions filed by students seeking upper age limit relaxation to appear in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) 2018.The CBSE conducted exam for various medical courses is to be held on Sunday, May 6, 2018. The last date for applying for NEET is March 9, 2018.
The CBSE had imposed the age limit on the basis of a notification issued by the Medical Council of India on January 22, 2018, amending its Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 1997.
A two-member bench of Justices S.A. Bobde and L. Nageswara Rao, however, dismissed the petitions but gave the petitioners liberty to approach the High Courts concerned.
Advocate Mukund P. Unni who appeared on behalf of a student from Kerala Jasna Shayla, however, submitted that as students in the petition belonged to various states, to move the High Courts on time and before March 9 would be a difficult proposition reports Hindu.
In her petition, Ms. Jasna stated that the age regulation “directly affects her as her age will go beyond the prescribed limit”.
Ms. Jasna ‘s petition said the notification imposing an age limit violated the constitutional norms, which guaranteed the right to equality before the law to every person.
The students in their petition had argued that if the apex court could have granted an age relaxation last year, why could it not do the same for NEET 2018
Last year, however, the Supreme Court had cancelled the NEET upper age limit imposed by the CBSE saying that it could not have done the same ‘by way of notice on the Medical Council of India (MCI) instructions.’
