Medical College under scanner for allegedly charging 11.5 lakh Extra fee from Final Year MBBS students
Solan: Controversy has erupted after allegations surfaced that a city-based medical college had charged an extra fee from final year MBBS students two days before the semester examinations.
According to a media report, the institute has been accused of charging a sixth-year fee from MBBS students. Therefore to check upon the serious allegations, the state Educational Institutes Regulatory Commission has initiated a probe on the matter.
The matter came to light when a final year student at Maharishi Markandeshwar Medical College (MMMC) was allegedly forced to pay extra fees. The MBBS student had joined the medical college in 2013 and had to appear for her last semester exam on 1st December 2018. The doctor along with one of her batchmates was asked to deposit an amount of Rs 11.50 lakh two days before the exam.
Being a four and a half years course followed by an internship, the college cannot charge this fee, reports Tribune.
The medicos were allowed to appear in the theory examination only after they gave the undertaking to pay the fees. Before the practical examination, they were again pressurized to pay the additional fee.

The student had alleged that the extra fee was deposited in a separate account, reports the Tribune.
The matter was taken to the Himachal Pradesh Private Educational Institutes Regulatory Commission along with the statements of students in this regard.
The commission had strictly barred the medical colleges to charge any extra amount; therefore, it took an initiative to verify the allegations made on the medical college. It had gathered the 'five-year record of performance of students, who had levelled this allegation, as well as her fee record, had been sought from the university' as it launched the probe.
Several other issues related to security and bank guarantee being charged by the medical college management will be a point of concern for the commission.
The management of the medical college, however, denied any such allegations made by the students.
