Private Medical college MCI inspection: MBBS students allege Ghost faculties, College threatens to take disciplinary action

Written by Shagufta Perween Perween Published On 2019-07-08T16:48:35+05:30  |  Updated On 18 Aug 2021 3:04 PM IST
Thiruvananthapuram: A group of MBBS students associated with SR Medical College will be facing "disciplinary action" by the management for allegedly circulating a visual on social media showing irregularity in the administration. This allegedly obstructed the inspection of the Medical Council of India (MCI) following the incident.

SR Medical College is a self-financing medical college in the state of Kerala. The institution had received the MCI nod for the MBBS course first in 2016, after that it did not receive the recognition in the coming years due to inadequate infrastructure.

According to media reports, a group of MBBS students made a video which captured few people who were being brought inside the institution through the backside of the medical college during an MCI inspection. The same video was soon shared on their facebook pages

The MBBS students under the banner of 'Stand With Students of SR Medical College' pointed out that the management of misleading MCI assessors by admitting from outside on daily wages posing them as patients. The medical students alleged that there were visuals of a protest over the promised money as well, reports the
    Deccan Chronicle
    .

The MCI was on a visit to the institution when the anomalies against the institution were raised which allegedly disrupted the inspection. Following the protest, the MCI team stopped the inspection.

This apparently angered the management that moved to take action against the medicos

A management representative told the New Indian Express that "The inspection was scheduled for two days. But assessors couldn't carry out an inspection as a section of students disrupted it. Their action is unacceptable and the management is going to take action against them."

The management authorities denied any such allegations and explained that the institution offers treatment at low cost for patients who are financially weak. The visuals through which students were making allegations were actually patients who were brought in as part of a medical camp.

The principle of the institution alleged that few students want to shift to Government Medical colleges for which they want a closure of the medical college, reports the New Indian Express.

On the other hand, the students had sought government intervention so that the medical college comes up with better facilities and infrastructure so that they can get their MBBS course completed on time.

A student told the New Indian Express, "It is the management which is creating problems. They want assessors not to carry out the inspection. Now, they are saying we created the mess. The management has miserably failed in ensuring basic infrastructure and other prerequisites for medical education."

Following the incident, Kerala University of Health Sciences assured that the matter will be probed and the affiliation will be cancelled if the allegations will be observed true.
