MCI gives permission for 5 new medical colleges in West Bengal; 650 MBBS Seats to be added
The new government colleges are based at Diamond Harbour, Cooch Behar, Raiganj and Rampurhat which were given the MCI recognition with 100 MBBS seats each. The private medical college Shri Ramkrishna Institute of Medical Sciences & Sanaka Hospitals, Durgapur got an approval of 150 MBBS Seats.
Kolkata: The state of West Bengal is all set to see a major boost in medical education as the Medical Council of India (MCI) has given its approval to five new medical colleges which will increase the state's MBBS pool by 650 seats.
With this, the total number of Medical Colleges in the state has touched 18 where one is central government-run college, four private medical colleges, and 13 state-run medical colleges. The total number of existing MBBS seats in both private and government medical colleges is 2,600. From this academic session, the number of seats will get up to 3,250 at least.
The Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that as a part of the centre's approval for setting up 58 new medical colleges across the country. Five of them were identified in Bengal.

After a recent inspection conducted at the medical colleges, the apex medical council has issued a letter of permission where it gave its recognition to the four new government medical colleges and one new private medical college.
The new government colleges are based at Diamond Harbour, Cooch Behar, Raiganj and Rampurhat which were given the MCI recognition with 100 MBBS seats each. The private medical college Shri Ramkrishna Institute of Medical Sciences & Sanaka Hospitals, Durgapur got an approval of 150 MBBS Seats. The MCI gave its nod to after a gap of three years to ICARE Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Haldia with an intake of 150 MBBS seats.
The authorities gave an overwhelming reaction when the MCI nod was given to medical colleges to elevate the MBBS seats by 650.
The Director of Medical Education told the TOI, "We have got the letter of permission from MCI to start taking in students for these four new medical colleges along with a new private medical college. We are also expecting to get permission for the Purulia Medical College. If we get permission for that, the number of seats will go up further. This perhaps is the highest jump in MBBS seats in any particular academic year in the state."
