Maharashtra: Private Medical College moves Bombay HC on centralized medical admissions

Mumbai:Deemed institutes that have been crying foul against the state government decision’s to hold a centralised process for deemed universities. As far as medical admission’s go,one of them- the Pravara Insitute of Medical Sciences Ahmednagar, has moved the Bombay High Court's Aurangabad bench against the state government's decision.

This deemed institute is run by the Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil's family. Mr Patil is a leader of opposition in the legislative assembly. This judicial move, may lead to further delay in the admission processes of deemed medical and dental institutes this year; adding to student remorse, as well.

Approximately, 20,500 aspirants from all over India have submitted applications for admissions to deemed institutes in the state. Another 17,648 students have applied for private colleges;Wednesday being the last date for registration.

Rajendra Vikhe-Patil, who manages the deemed university, while confirming the news, refused to elaborate. Another deemed university in charge who preferred to remain anonymous, came out categorically saying that having checked with ten other states, they had found that theirs was the only one wherein the government was wanting to interfere in the admission process. He described the state government’s decision pertaining to their deemed universities as ‘unfair’.

He went on to add that the circular released by the Union Health Ministry, did not make it mandatory for states to control admissions in deemed institutes.

Calling the decision 'politically motivated' as most of the deemed universities were run by opposition groups, he went on to say that the resolution threatened their autonomy, which was governed by the Central University Grant Commission's Act and could not be overruled by the state.
