Madurai Medical College likely to get 32 seats in 8 DM, Mch courses

Madurai: The Madurai Medical College is likely to get the Medical Council of India’s (MCI) approval to offer eight new Super-Specialty (SS) courses with a total of 32 seats (4 seats for each course) expectantly from this academic year.

In addition, two existing DM courses will see a boost of 6 seats once approved by the apex medical regulator.

According to a recent report by TOI, new SS courses that would be introduced at the Madurai Medical College include 4 DM and 4 MCh courses which comprise the following specialities:

    DM:

    • Nephrology

    • Endocrinology

    • Oncology

    • Gastroenterology

    MCh:

    • Surgical Gastroenterology

    • Surgical Oncology

    • Vascular surgery

    • Urology

All these 8 courses would be allotted 4 seats each making it a total of 32 fresh SS seats at the medical college.

The strong expectation of the MCI’s approval by the medical college authorities comes following the inspection rounds conducted by the apex medical council at the institute.

Informing about the same, certain officials from the Madurai Medical College stated that the MCI had conducted an inspection of all courses which got over last week.

“We’re hoping to get the approval as soon as possible so that we could start admissions for all the courses from this academic year itself,” a certain source from the medical college told TOI.

As of now, the Madurai Medical College offers DM in Cardiology, Neurology with 2 seats, however, as per the sources, 6 seats will be added to these courses once approved by the MCI.

The medical colleges, at present, also offers MCh courses in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery and Plastic Surgery.

With the approval, the university will in total conduct classes for 14 SS courses.

Earlier this year, the medical college authorities had informed that 2 new PG courses, MD Respiratory Medicine and MD Community Medicine with 4 seats each would be introduced from the academic year 2019-20 after the MCI gave its permission.

Previously, Medical Dialogues reported about the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital getting MCI’s nod to conduct classes for the 4 SS courses Neurology, Cardiology, Medical Gastroenterology and Surgical Oncology from the next academic year.
