Madhya Pradesh Medical University to grant medical degrees from 2017: MCI

All Government and private medical colleges are to be registered with the Madhya Pradesh Medical University (MPMU), Jabalpur for the coming academic session. The university will grant degrees to the MBBS students after 4 years, as the 2017-18 batch will be the first batch of students passing out of the medical university.

Students who have been admitted in government and private medical colleges in the year 2012 will get their degrees from universities their colleges are affiliated to.

Senior Medical Education Department officials told Hitavada that based on initiatives taken by the state government, the Medical Council of India (MCI),has already written to the Government of India, informing them to notify the Jabalpur Medical University, about the issuance of degrees by them. It has also asked the centre to indicate to them about the completion of formalities for MCI's recognition to the university. Without being MCI recognized, the university's degree will not be valid for registration with the Madhya Pradesh Medical Council.

Junior Doctors belonging to state Government Medical Colleges are believed to have threatened the government to hasten the process of MCI recognition being granted to the Jabalpur Medical University. They have given a fifteen days ultimatum, after which they will go on strike, thereby bringing to a halt all essential medical services associated with medical colleges.

According to information, the Medical Education Department has already given the government and private medical colleges, directives that the students of the new MBBS batches will be registered with the medical university.

Manish Rastogi, Commissioner, Medical Education, said the Junior doctor's ultimatum of strike on the issue of the MCI granting recognition to the Jabalpur Medical University made little sense in the prevailing circumstance. As the education regulator had already alerted the Government of India to notify the Medical University about the issuance of degrees by it in February,2017.The university is to issue degrees after four years , not immediately, he told Hitavada.
