The suicide note suggested that the first-year nursing student was worried about a Rs 5 lakh loan that her father had taken and she was finding it difficult to understand the lectures in English. She also hinted that she failed to live up to certain expectations.

Kolkata:  Depressed over being unable to understand English lectures and loan taken by her father; a first-year nursing student of the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital allegedly committed suicide.

The student was found hanging at the lobby on the top floor of the medical college campus hostel. A suicide note was found from her room, police informed PTI. The note suggested that she was worried about a Rs 5 lakh loan that her father had taken and she was finding it difficult to understand the lectures in English. She also hinted that she failed to live up to certain expectations.

Deputy Superintendent of National Medical College Dr. Bimal Bondhu Saha informed News18, “It is a very unfortunate incident. As per her suicide note, she was concerned about a Rs 5 Lakh loan taken by her father, and she was finding it difficult to understand the lectures in English. She also hinted that she failed to live up to the expectations of her father.”

Police sources informed that the student was apparently fine even the night before the incident, as she was seen chatting with her friends and enjoying a mini picnic with her hostel mates on November 15th night, after which all of them retired to bed.

“It was in the morning, when some students in the hostel found her hanging from an iron grille fixed in the lobby on the top floor of the nursing hostel with the help of a sari. They alerted the authorities,” an officer told TOI

The investigating officers are probing to ascertain if the deceased had been subjected to harassment in her workplace. The girl, who originally hailed from Cooch Behar, had faced difficulties in studying her course in English.
