Haryana Civil Hospital to commence DNB Gynaecology; Seats yet to be decided

Chandigarh: In a major development to the PG medical education segment in the state, the Panchkula Civil Hospital Sector 6 has bagged the nod of authorities to commence the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) in Gynaecology course; DNB Gynaecology.

To ascertain if the institute does hold all the necessary infrastructure and facilities to impart teaching for the said course, the NBE is expected to soon visit the hospital premises to assess the Gynaecology department's ward, OPD and delivery section of the hospital. After thoroughly inspecting the necessary factors, the authorities will make a final report based on only which, it will be decided as to what number of seats should be allotted to the hospital for DNB Gynaecology.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that to meet the acute dearth of specialists in the area, eight civil hospitals in Haryana- based in Panchkula, Faridabad, Gurugram, Ambala, Sonepat, Kaithal, Hisar, and Bahadurgarh had applied to the NBE to start DNB course in various specialities at their hospitals. The applications were submitted after NBE had invited for Online Accreditation Application Registration from various government and private hospitals.

The move intended to provide an extended platform to MBBS students who aspire to go for the broad speciality course.

Now, according to the Panchkula Civil hospital administration, apart from Gynaecology, they had also sent a request letter to the Health Ministry seeking commencement of respective courses in orthopaedics, medicine, ENT, surgery and pediatric departments.

The response on the applications excluding orthopaedics; is still pending with the Ministry since earlier, the NBE team had inspected the hospital before granting seats for the orthopaedics department. The institute had also begun the radiology department before that.

Glad about the progress, the Principal Medical Officer (PMO), Dr Bhardwaj, told TOI: “For the DNB courses in various departments, a team of the National Medical Council will assess and send a report. After getting the number of seats, we will start the course here.”

DNB, a 3-year course is a substitute of MD/MS course which is offered by civil/ private hospitals to provide specialization to doctors after their MBBS degree. The DNB degree is awarded by the NBE which is an autonomous body under the Union Ministry of Health.

The DNB stands as an alternative to MD/MS courses run at medical colleges and was primarily introduced at large hospitals to meet the scarcity of specialists which has become a growing matter of concern in the medical fraternity.
