EWS quota in Gujarat: Centre grants 600 more MBBS seats
Ahmedabad: The Central government has given its approval to the addition of 600 MBBS seats in over 12 medical colleges in Gujarat in order to adjust the newly implemented 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS)
The 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) was implemented a couple of months ago by the State Government in MBBS admissions from the current academic year. Gujarat was the first state to implement the EWS quota and with the present nod from the Centre, the state will have a total of 5500 medical seats.

Confirmation to this was recently given by Nitin Patel, Deputy Chief Minister, who announced in the Gujarat Assembly that he has received an approval letter from the centre showing a green flag for 600 more medicals seats in 12 medical colleges in the state.
Though the state had earlier demanded to increase 28 more MBBS seats in order to adjust the EWS quota, the centre has approved 22 more seats than what was asked for, thereby granting 50 seats each for 12 medical colleges, the minister added.

Among the 12 medical colleges, two of them are run by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) while two MBBS colleges at Palanpur and Dahod which have been set up under the state government’s Brown Field Health Policy. The Gujarat Medical & Education Research Society (GMERS) runs the remaining 8 medical colleges.
