Gujarat: 50 additional seats granted to medical college by High Court

Ahmedabad:The Karamsad's Pramukhswami Medical College has been allowed to admit 150 students this academic year, through an interim order passed by the Gujarat High Court. The 150 seats include an additional 50 allotted to the college by a Committee appointed by the Supreme Court.

The Centre had earlier disallowed permission of the additional 50 to the college, which had then been restricted to continue with a 100 admissions. This led to the college management to move the Supreme Court in its fight to gain the additional 50, stated a release of the college.

The Medical Council of India(MCI) and the Centre maintained a silence on the High Court’s query on the matter. The apex court, on July 31, decided to go ahead with the granting of permission to the college for an additional 50 seats, saying that the urgency of the issue regarding continuity of education of students, allows the college to be given a seat increase.

"However, it is made clear that the petitioners (college management) have to take care of all other rules and regulations for such admission and to clarify the requirement of law, if any, so also to provide all basic infrastructure and facilities as per the rules," the HC said. The matter has been posted for a further hearing on 12^th October, reports TOI.
