GMC Kozhikode receives a nod for Rs 12.92 crore STP by KMC

A detailed project report submitted by Ram Biologicals for construction of a sewerage and septage treatment plant (STP)at the Government Medical College, Kozhikode to check groundwater contamination, received a nod of the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation(KMC), on Tuesday.

The contamination which is occurring due to effluents released from the institution has been a cause for concern in the surrounding vicinities of Mayanad and Chevayur besides areas close to the medical college. The STP is to be a permanent solution to the issue.

On October 11 the Council approved the proposal for a plant resulting in the inclusion of the project in the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) scheme. This project inclusion decision was taken at a meeting chaired by the Principal Secretary of Local Self-Governance the next day.

Officials of Ram Biologicals Reena Anil Kumar and V. Rajesh presented the DPR outlining the scientific process of the sewerage treatment.

More than 6 million litres of water is supplied to the college by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA), every day; of this 5 million litre of sewerage is released by the college daily.Considered the quantity consumed and released one STP for treatment of sewerage is not practical.

Presently 2 STP’s of 2 million-litre capacity is in operation. Five more STPs are to be added under the new Rs. 12.92-crore project.
Meant to run on hybrid technology, the water treated by the plants is to be used for gardening and the sludge as manure.

With a 10-year maintenance contract, the project will also cater to the Institute of Chest Diseases and the hostels and the Dental College. It is also expected to benefit 5,000 residences in the area reports the Hindu.

Government Medical College, Kozhikode (Previously called Calicut Medical College) is a premier medical college located in Kozhikode, Kerala. It was established in 1957 as the second medical college in Kerala. Today the institution enjoys the status of being a premier centre of medical education in the state. The medical college campus houses several institutions like Government Dental College, Government nursing college, College of Pharmacy, Super-specialty block, Institute of Chest Diseases and Institute of Maternal and Child Health. Presently, housing 3025 licensed beds the hospital enjoys the status of being the largest hospital in the India due to its bed strength.
