GMC Amritsar: Resident Doctor assaulted, Faculty stands in protest
Amritsar: A protest was staged by the Punjab State Medical and Dental Teachers Association at Government Medical College (GMC) over an assault on a resident doctor. The incident occurred on Friday night. The protest had been planned, earlier, to oppose the National Medical Commission proposal according to recent media reports. However, the assault on the resident doctor, saw the protestors take on the issue of condemning the attackers and urging the college authorities for ensuring safety and security of the doctors.
According to sources, parents of a child who had been brought in for treatment felt that the staff on duty were not paying proper attention to their child. This led to them getting angry and assaulting a resident doctor.
Dr Mridu Gupta, President, Association, told the Tribune, “Repeated incidents of assault on doctors are reported. The government has failed to check the problem. Doctors try their best to save every patient but limitations in the medical field sometimes result in deaths.”
The association went onto further state that it stood in opposition to the proposed NMC bill which was to replace the Medical Council of India.
The protest had students of the college expressing solidarity with the doctors and faculty.
