Free hair transplants for Burn Victims at Stanley Medical College

Chennai: The Government Stanley Medical College Hospital is soon going to provide free of cost hair transplants to survivors of burns and acid attacks.

For this purpose, the medical college management recently conducted a three-day workshop to equip doctors in the state of Tamil Nadu from various government hospitals with the skills and means to be able to undertake such hair transplants.

This step is indeed going to help hundreds of patients, who suffer a burns injury or acid attack resulting in severe injuries to their skin tissues. While many of these patients avail cosmetic procedures to gain back a sense of normalcy, many lose hairlines in the incidents, which result in no growth of hair in affected areas. Financial issues are also one of the problems that many of the survivors face during treatment.

However, with free of cost treatment, that too, from well trained medical professionals, this initiative will help these survivors to make their appearances look better.

During the three-day continuing medical education and live operative workshop for this better cause, 20 plastic surgeons of the Institute for Research and Rehabilitation of Hand and Department of Plastic Surgery were getting trained to perform the procedure.

“This workshop is the beginning of hair transplant procedures that the department is going to do. Through this workshop, we want to train doctors on hair transplant and also create awareness among people that such transplants are being done here free of cost,” said Dr V Ramadevi, Head of Plastic Surgery Department of the Stanley Medical College informed TNIE.

“Hair transplants cost a minimum of Rs 1 lakh. But this will be available free of cost. Another 30 doctors including from Madras Medical College and Kilpauk Medical College, are also undergoing training,” Dr Ramadevi added while having a conversation with The Hindu.

Pragya Prasun, an acid attack survivor and founder of Bengaluru-based Atijeevan Foundation, an organisation that rehabilitates acid attack survivors said that every survivor of burns or acid attacks needs a hairline and eyebrows to look normal.

“There are many young, underprivileged acid attack victims whose face is disfigured in the attack. Some of them even don’t know if the hair transplant comes under cosmetic and plastic surgery. Eyebrows, eyelashes and hair line is important for burn and acid attack victims as it would make their appearance better,” she added.
