First Professor Viswanathan Gold Medal Oration delivered at Stanley Medical College on Hypertension and Diabetes

Chennai: Senior experts from the field of Diabetology participated in the first Prof. M. Viswanathan Stanley medical college gold medal oration organised by Institute of Diabetology of GOVT. STANLEY MEDICAL COLLEGE AND HOSPITAL.

Renowned medical experts namely Dr Ponnambala Namasivayam, Dean – Govt. Stanley Medical College and Hospital , Dr. D. Shantharam, Former Vice-Chancellor of TN Dr. MGR Medical University , Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre, Dr. V.Seshiah , Former Professor and HOD of Diabetology Madras Medical College and Dr. Shanmugam addressed the gathering and enlightened the audience on their insights and experience in the field of Diabetology .

This was followed by the special oration on the topic Diabetes And Hypertension: A Twin Challenge which is the first Prof. M. Viswanathan Stanley Medical College Oration and was delivered by Dr Isaac Christian Moses who was the former Dean of Govt. Stanley Medical College.

Commemorating the memory of (late) Prof. Viswanathan, the Prof. M. Viswanathan Stanley medical college gold medal oration is a distinguished Lecture Award given every year to the person who contributes to research, clinical practice and betterment for the field of Diabetology.

Commenting on the occasion Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre and eldest son of Prof. M. Viswanathan said “ Chennai and Stanley can be justifiably proud that Diabetology was born in Chennai through my father Prof. M. Viswanathan who started the first diabetic clinic in India at Stanley Medical College and Hospital in 1948. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of this clinic, it is very gratifying to note that the Diabetic Clinic started by him has now been upgraded into an Institute of Diabetology. It was extremely nice of Dr A. Shanmugam and the administrators to start an Oration to commemorate the memory of my late father Prof. M.
Viswanathan, who is widely considered as the ‘Father Of Diabetology’ in India. “

Institute of Diabetology conferred the ‘First Prof. M. Viswanathan Stanley Medical College Gold Medal Oration’ to Dr Isaac Christian Moses for his remarkable contributions in the field of Diabetology. Dr Isaac Christian Moses, former Dean of Stanley Medical College is the first recipient of Prof. M. Viswanathan Gold Medal. He was the key person for the initiation & upgradation of Govt. Stanley Medical College and Hospital’s Department of Diabetology to the Institute of Diabetology which also led to the betterment of the Institute with a new exclusive block with adequate staff patterns.
