Faculty Training for Doctors: Doon Medical College to offer Crash courses from January 2020

Dehradun: To impart faculty training to its doctors so these medical professionals can improve the doctor-patient relationship and at the same time, they get sensitised with teaching skills for the new MBBS curriculum, the Doon Medical College is going to offer several crash courses from January 2020.

The training will be given by experts coming from Rishikesh and Delhi branches of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), King George's Medical University (KGMU), and many other renowned medical colleges across the country.

According to Doon Medical College authorities, the decision to offer the crash courses has been taken in view of the Faculty Development Programme imparted by the apex Medical Council of India (MCI).

As per MCI, the objective behind the Faculty Development Programme is to improve the quality of medical training by training the teachers first. It is about sensitizing teachers about new concepts in teaching and assessment methods, developing knowledge and clinical skills required for performing the role of a competent and effective teacher, administrator, researcher and mentor. This programme aims to assist clinicians to acquire competency in communication and behavioural skills as well as update knowledge using modern information and research methodology tools.

Comprehending to this programme, the medical college has decided to begin crash courses related to teaching, patient treatment and behaviour training. Based on the involvement in these courses, promotions and other perks given to the hospital staff. Every second and third Thursday of a month will be dedicated to these training programs and every teacher and doctor has to attend it.

Every department has to present reports and presentations related to the topics assigned to them. Those missing from the training sessions will get alerts and notices.

Talking to TOI, Principal of Doon Medical College, Dr Ashutosh Sayana informed that the new faculty training will be mandatory for the doctors and teachers of institute and its attached hospital. "Even our doctors, who happen to be experts in their fields, will visit other institutions to deliver lectures and share their knowledge," said Dr Sayana.

Earlier, Medical Dialogues had reported that to strengthen the teaching of MBBS and PG Medical courses at the medical colleges of the country, the Medical Council Of India Board of Governors (MCI BOG) had given their nod to the concept of visiting faculty.

The apex medical regulator, however, in its approved proposal noted that this system of having visiting faculties would only be a top-up, over and above the regular fulltime faculty, and such visiting faculty staff will not be counted as regular teaching staff as required under the Minimum Standard Regulations.
