Exam Performance pressure: Baroda Medical College Student ends life

VADODARA: A 27-year-old student of Baroda Medical College committed suicide at the students hostel on Friday afternoon. Hiral Thummar, a third-year student of MD (anesthesia), injected herself with propofol when she was alone in the hostel room.

She was rushed to SSG Hospital for treatment, but Hiral breathed her last by 2.30 pm.

The police reported her to have been depressed, due to failure in the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare conducted DNB exam, for the second time.

"Her father told us that she had failed in the DNB exams earlier and reappeared again. But Hiral didn't perform well in the exams and hence was depressed since last few days," said F K Jogal, Raopura police inspector.

Hiral’s suicide note also speaks of the same. "There is no suspicion of foul play. Her body was handed over to her family after the post-mortem," Jogal added.

According to police information Hiral used to stay at home in Vasna, but occasionally, did live in her colleague Dr Parul Prajapati’s hostel room.

On Friday, when Doctor Prajapati knocked the hostel room door, Hiral opened it and fell unconscious on the floor. When Parul stepped in she saw a bottle , an injection and another half empty bottle of Propofol. An overdose of the sedative Propofol can be fatal reports TOI.

Parul’s call for help proved to be too late. Hiral’r brother is an MBBS student in Ahmedabad and her father Mansukh Thummar a practicing chartered accountant.
