EWS quota: Goa Medical College gains 30 more MBBS seats for academic year 2019-20

Written by Shagufta Perween Perween Published On 2019-07-07T11:26:53+05:30  |  Updated On 18 Aug 2021 1:02 PM IST
PANAJI: In order to fill up the medical seats under the quota for Economically Weaker Sections, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has given permission to add 30 seats to the existing 150 MBBS seats at the Goa Medical College (GMC) for the academic year 2019-20.

The state government had earlier written to the Union ministry of health and family welfare to add 50 MBBS seats at the medical institution to facilitate EWS quota. However, the Ministry confirmed the enhancement of 30 MBBS seats for the upcoming academic year.

Goa Medical College is a government institution and hospital which is one of the oldest medical colleges in Asia. It is currently an organic institution of the Goa University being its oldest unit. It offers MBBS as well as post-graduate courses that are, MD, MS, PG Diploma and super-specialty courses in various departments.

The institute offered 150 MBBS seats out of which 64 seats were reserved for general category which is likely to go up after the addition of 30 seats. It has an intake of 86 seats for PG courses in which 50 percent is by All India Quota.

To fill up the newly constructed seats under the EWS quota, the centre has directed the counselling authorities to start the procedure.

As per the schedule, the admission process for the 150 seats was completed. The admission under the EWS quota will be done later.

An official told the TOI that they were expecting an increase of 50 MBBS seats but the nod was given for 30 seats. He further explained the procedure for the admission to these seats.

"Since admissions for 150 seats have been completed, for the balance 30 seats, it will be done as per the merit list. Those at top of the wait list will benefit," the official added.

Talking in regard to the PG medical seats the official further told that "The post graduate seats of the medical college will be hiked in view of reservation for EWS, however, it hasn't been confirmed yet."
