Doon Medical College: Dr Ashutosh Sayana assumes charge as Principal
Dehradun: Dr Ashutosh Sayana has taken the charge of the new Principal of the Government run Doon Medical College (GDMC) Dehradun.
Dr Sayana assumed his new onus on 11th January from the officiating Principal Dr Navin Thapliyal. Dr Sayana plans to strengthen the medical education and health system of Uttarakhand.
Dr Sayana is a native of Chamoli district. He is an MS in general surgery from King George's Medical College, Lucknow. He commenced his career from Escorts Delhi and continued taking professional leaps by working with Dr Batra's and Safdargunj Hospital, Delhi.
Presently, he holds twenty years of experience in the medical field with the onset of his career in the year 1999. Dr Sayana has served as an assistant professor in Haldwani medical college from 2003. In 2015, he got posted in Dehradun as the assistant director of the medical education department.
The charge of the Director, Medical Education would now be assumed by the Mission Director, National Health Mission (NHM).
In the month of November, he got promoted to the post of Director. He also held the post of Registrar and Exam Controller of Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Medical Education University (HNB Medical University) to which the Doon Medical College is affiliated with.

"Being a native of this state, my entire focus will be on strengthening the medical education and health system of Uttarakhand. The prime agenda would be on streamlining bottlenecks to give the perfect medical education to the students at a bare minimum cost with state-of-art facilities in the college and hospital so that we get best doctors from Uttarakhand, "Dr Sayana shared his focus as the Principal of Doon medical college with TOI.
According to a report by the Pioneer, the post of principal GDMC remained vacant from November last when the 3-year deputation of the Principal Dr Pradip Bharati Gupta ended. Dr Gupta had applied for an extension of his reputation but it had been not accepted by the Government. The works of the principal had been performed by Prof Navin Thapliyal in the interim.

A day after assuming the charge of Principal, newly appointed Principal Dr Ashutosh Sayana visited the Doon Hospital. During this visit, he inspected various department at the medical facility. The Principal inspected the Emergency Ward and Swine Flu Ward. On the issue of obsolete medical equipment, he has asked to provide the proposal in this regard, reports Jagran.
Dr Sayana also had to witness an unfortunate incident at the medical college. Recently, a 2nd-year MBBS student at the medical college had allegedly committed suicide due to depression. The deceased student was found hanging to a ceiling fan by the hostel administration after the student's family called them when they failed to get any response on the repeated calls on the student's phone. Disheartened, the family informed that it was student's birthday a day after they were informed about the incident.
