Delhi: Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College to offer 100 MBBS seats

Delhi: Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College to offer 100 MBBS seats
Delhi: The recently inaugurated Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College will begin the first academic session by offering 100 MBBS seats. With this addition, the city based GMCs will now offer 1100 seats. Out of this, 485 medical seats are for Delhi students.

Delhi government had last year sanctioned Rs 29.59 crore to establish the temporary pre-fabricated structure for Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini.

Since this is a temporary structure with a capacity of offering 100 MBBS seats initially, the capacity of the medical institute is only expected to go up after construction of a permanent structure. The likely capacity of the new medical college is likely to be accommodate 300 students.

Stating that Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College was the only state-run medical college that came up in the city in last six decades, Kejriwal quipped that the next one should not take another 60 years.

"A total of 1,000 seats are available in the government medical colleges in Delhi which need to be increased. The city should be developed into an education hub," he said.

"With the addition of 100 seats of Dr B R Ambedkar Medical College to the existing 1,000 seats, there are just 485 medical seats for Delhi students which need to be increased urgently," he added.

“The proposed pre-fabricated structure is as good as permanent one with a life of approximately 20 years and can be utilized for the entire life of 20 years without dismantling as the site has been identified carefully and will not cause impediment in the construction of permanent building,” the official explained.

Also present on the inauguration was Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain. “The course for MBBS should be reduced to three years from five years and MD course duration must be enhanced from three years to five years,” he said after inaugurating Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College — Delhi government’s first medical college. Explaining the reason behind his demand to make the change in the duration of the course, Jain said the students pursuing the five-year MD course will be able to practice simultaneously.
