Coimbatore : Surgery PG student commits suicide

Coimbatore : Lakshmi, a 26 year student allegedly suffering from depression is reported to have leaped to death from the fifth floor of PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research on Avinashi Road in Peelamedu. According to police reports, lakshmi was depressed, as she was finding it difficult to cope with her studies. It is alleged that she was on medication to cope with stress. However the exact reason for suicide is yet to be confirmed.

Lakshmi, daughter of A. Narendran, 66 and resident Kerela, had completed her MBBS at home had joined PSG six weeks ago to pursue her Masters in Surgery.

Lakshmi was staying at the post graduate students' hostel located inside the college campus. "She was taking some medication to treat her depression. We found some pills in her handbag. Her parents said that she had been finding it very difficult to focus on her studies. She often told her parents she was depressed," said K Gobi, Inspector of Police, Peelamedu, police station. No suicide note was found in her room.

On Tuesday afternoon, Lakshmi rushed out of a female ward on the fifth floor of the PSG hospital building and leaped to her death. Initial investigation revealed that her elder sister also committed suicide, ten years ago in Kerala.

Her mother A Sudha, 56, a kidney patient, often travelled to PSG hospital for dialysis. Her father Narendran, an engineer working in the Gulf had returned to India recently to take up agriculture in Palakkad. The family lived in a rented house in the area..
