Chandigarh: PGIMER initiates Day Care OTs to handle patient rush

Chandigarh: The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences(PGIMER), launched a dedicated 'day care operation theater' on Monday. The operation theater is meant to accomplish minor procedures in order to handle patient rush in the main OTs of the institute. The Institute checked the tracks of the operation theater, established in the new OPD block, successfully on Saturday

Sources at the institute revealed that surgeries of six departments will be done by the new OT initially.These include Ortho, ENT, and General Surgery

"In next six months, we are planning to start one more day care OT. Once the infrastructure comes up, there are plans to setup more such OT's," said an official.

"From Monday, we are expecting that it would decrease the load of the surgeries in the main OT. Now, more day care procedure could be performed," said a doctor.

On Monday, five surgeries planned were done .Patients who go through day care surgeries, on developing complications, have the facility to get admitted in the hospital. PGI doctors admit to not having sufficient OTs at the institute, despite patient rush having increased.

The PGIMER administration is planning to set up twenty five 'Modular Operation Theaters' and has initiated the process for the same. There is a demand for "a world-class new OT complex" by the PGI Faculty Association.

PGI Faculty Association Head, Dr T D Yadav said that the day care OT would bring some relief to the patients. "It would help in training programs as well," he told the Indian Express .
