Pune: A woman from Kondwa looking for a medical seat for her son was duped of Rs. 6.49 lakhs in August 2017 by a conman, who promised her son an admission in a medical college in Wardha. The victim lodged an FIR against the man with the Kondhwa police, on Tuesday.

The woman was introduced to the conman by her brother, a city-based medical practitioner, who gave her his contact number saying that the admission could be sought through the central pool quota, revealed the police.

The woman is believed to have contacted the person on the given number, in August last year, and the man at the other end informed her of a vacancy in a medical college of Wardha.

"The suspect had also told the woman to mail him the mark list of her son and other related documents," said an officer of the Kondhwa police.

On 19th August last year, the lady was asked to transfer Rs. 49,000, as registration fee, in an account number of a Bihar bank.

"After receiving the money, the suspect mailed an admission and a nomination form to the medical college, which the complainant filled and mailed back," the officer said.

On August 28 the conman informed her of her son having secured a seat in the medical college and sent her an approval notice. "He then told the woman to transfer Rs 6 lakh to the bank account," the officer said. The amount was transferred into the account by the woman’s husband the next day.

After receiving the sum, the man disappeared, breaking all links with the victim.

Having waited for a couple of days, the woman on Tuesday, filed a complaint with the cyber crime cell."The probe revealed that the suspect's cell phone number was registered in West Bengal," the officer said. The investigation continues, reports TOI.
