Manipur:Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, JNIMS, the only state government run medical science institution seems to be in doldrums , as the state seems in two minds about appointing a director for the institution. The Director is meant to look after the affairs of this premier institution.

There are reports in the media off and on that speak of the existing corrupt malpractices in the institution. However, there is little done by the government authorities to curb the same.

Procurement of Medical equipments like MRI machine by paying triple the amount of the actual rate, Self regularization of contractual post, alleged collection of money in the name of regularization of the contract post, cannot be negotiated as publicity for treating a few selected people, who can’t afford medical expenditure.

Dr. L. Deban, in-charge, Director, JNIMS, tenure got over on 15 July, 2017. Until further extension orders are issued Dr. Deban is no longer Director of the institution.

The Imphal Times has questioned the authorities of the institution regarding the total expenditure, in the name of free treatment to patients. According to medical reports, treatment expenses for these poor comes from central government’s specific head schemes, accusing the erstwhile director has been utilizing this money at his own will without bothering to consult the concerned government bodies.

With MCI recognition being given to JNIMS, it has now been sanctioned approval for opening post graduate study courses. Many students of non domicile status happen to be studying at the institution.

The hospital conducts 57 diagnostic tests, free of cost under the Prime Minister’s dream scheme.

MCI guidelines speak of de recognition of any Medical College, if found appointing ineligible Professors, Asst. Professors, Medical Superintendent or Director for positions.
