Nagpur: The Maharashtra Government has been reprimanded by the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court, which has questioned why contempt action should not be taken against it for not having still employed a regular Dean at the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College Hospital(IGGMCH).The Court mentioned the undertaking taken by the college for the same, at the last hearing.

A division bench comprising Justices Swapna Joshi and Bhushan Dharmadhikari issued a contempt notice to the State Medical Education Department's, Principal Secretary, directing him to submit a reply on the issue within four weeks.

The court directive came in response to a hearing on a PIL by CH Sharma and others regarding lack of facilities in Government Medical Colleges and Hospitals (GMC) across Vidarbha.

Earlier, Anup Gilda, the amicus curiae pointed out that the government had given an undertaking promising to fill all important posts, including that of the Dean, at IGGMCH before the commencement of the academic year (2017-18), in June. However, he referred to no steps having been taken in this regard, even after the promised last date.

At the last hearing, the Court had expressed a desire to dispose of the PIL, but Gilda had insisted that the High Court monitor the pending PIL issues, which otherwise, would be left to linger. He also felt that the government fund inflow would be stopped, if the case was disposed of.

Gilda informed that the PIL had seven major subjects, which it had addressed and they included: the formation of Akola and Gondia GMCs, MBBS seats in IGGMC and vacant positions in Super Specialty Hospital (SSH), among others, reports TOI.
