Vidarbha: Doctors Demand more seats in Psychiatry
Nagpur: Reviewing the shortage of psychiatrists passed from Government medical colleges in Vidarbha, the psychiatrists from the Nagpur region have written a letter to the Directorate of medical education and research (DMER) demanding to have more Post Graduation (PG) seats in psychiatry.
Among the 15 govt. medical colleges in Maharashtra only 2 college have postgraduate seats in psychiatry. None of the five colleges in Vidarbha have any seats in PG psychiatry.
Explaining the entire issue, the representatives of the city unit of Indian Psychiatry society (IPS) said that, Psychiatry is one of the of subject yet students do not opt it as their career option as the subject is not given its due importance. This is fueled by the less number of seats in the state for the same. In order to encourage more students to pick up the subject, they also wish the government medical colleges would have inpatient psychiatry departments and wards. Most of the psychiatrists are practicing in Mumbai and other near by areas, it therefore becomes more important to create more PG seats in the Field of Psychiatry in the outskirts.
Moreover, Most of the Doctors was believed psychiatry was an 'easy' job that could be done by anybody, he added. "Today, each psychiatrist in Nagpur would be seeing at least a hundred patients a week. Though the public opinion on taking psychiatric help has changed, that of medical fraternity has not," said Dr Saoji.
"The undergraduate medical students do not get any exposure to psychiatry during the course of MBBS," added the new president of IPS Nagpur Dr Anand Saoji.
Talking about the strength of Psychiatry practitioners they Dr. Praveer Waradkar, head of the psychiatry department of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital mentioned that " At present there are only 1000 practicing psychiatrists in the state, out of them 600-800 work in the Western part of the state. BJ Medical College and Mumbai's Grant Medical Colleges are the only which are providing PG seats. " as reported TOI
With the more PG psychiatrists students, several socially relevant projects could be taken up by the psychiatry departments of the hospitals in the region. Waradkar added.
