Dehradun: The State government has announced the setting up of 5 new government nursing colleges and a nursing school in Uttarakhand recently. Besides these nursing colleges, a government nursing school will also be set up in Haridwar . Auxiliary nurse midwives(ANM) health workers, and General Nursing & Midwifery (GNMs) helpers will be trained.

The new nursing colleges will be set up in Almora, Pithoragarh, Haldwani, Chamoli and Tehri districts ,after the approval of the Indian Nursing Council (a national regulatory body for nurses and nurse education in India). While each college will have a sanctioned 40 seats, the institution in Pithoragarh will take in 30 admissions.

The four-year courses in government colleges will cost around Rs 11,000 annually. Fee in private colleges starts at Rs 60,000.

The courses taught in these colleges, besides bringing the dream of nursing education closer to the hill state, would also provide it with a strong nursing force, as well as a professionally trained lower-level healthcare staff.

Presently, the state has a single government nursing college in Dehradun. Established in 2010, it has only 60 seats.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Ashutosh Sayana, Director, Medical Education Department, said, "We have tried for long to get approval for these colleges.”

"We are happy that we will not have to go to other states for a nursing course or pay a huge fee at a private institute," said a nursing aspirant, Sunita Kumari, a resident of Dehradun.

Since the academic session in the colleges will begin this year, the last date for filing applications for students to these courses will be November 10,2016. Classes are to commence from the 3
rd
week of November.

The Officials of the Medical Education Department conceded to the fact that college buildings were not ready in some districts, however, alternate arrangements for classes to be held have been made, ensuring commencement of the academic session on time.

"Students of the college in Chamoli will be sent to Tehri nursing college while students of Almora and Pithoragarh nursing colleges will be sent to Haldwani medical college for three months," said a department official..

"These colleges can enhance overall health services in Uttarkahand if the nursing students are asked to sign a bond with the state government to work in the hilly regions," added Dr J P Sharma, President, Indian Medical Association, Dehradun,

Nursing students do not have to sign a bond making service mandatory in the state of Uttarakhand, after the completion of their course; unlike doctors.
