Uttarakhand: Doon medical college is now awaiting the final nod from the MCI, to start its first session this year.

If the MCI approval comes through (expected by mid of June) the government medical college will start this year’s academic session by offering 150 seats.

Earlier the MCI team was schedule to visit the medical college by April 30, however, now it is not likely to visit the site at all. It will just check the compliance report sent by the college in an audio and video presentation format.

As quoted by TOI, "On May 10, experts from Central government will hold a meeting in Delhi following which the report of MCI will be sent to health ministry on May 15 for final go-ahead. Final picture will emerge by mid-June," a senior official of the medical education department said.

If it gets the MCI nod, Doon medical college will be the first state institute to offer 150 MBBS seats under NEET; out of which 127 seats accounting for 85% seats is under the local student quota.

Earlier, the much-hype surrounding the transition of Doon Hospital into Doon Medical College had started on a dissatisfactory chord with the MCI team.

After a surprise visit by the MCI officials to inspect the proposed Doon Medical College site in the beginning of the year, the meeting with the college officials ended on a concerning note.

This is reported to be the third site inspection by the MCI team of the medical college, and this is also the third continuous time MCI is unhappy with both the quality and pace of construction work.

Reportedly, Doon Medical College principal Dr Pradeep Bharati and director Dr Ashutosh Syana did the rounds of the academic and administrative blocks with the MCI team. However, unimpressed with the ongoing work, MCI was also concerned over the fact that most of the recruitment’s for the college hadn’t been done and so far and only a principal and some residents had been hired.
