UP DME to Medical Colleges: Violating protocol of treatment could have serious consequences

Pilibhit: The issuance of an instruction for compliance with the assigned protocol of treatment of patients by the Principal Secretary, Department of Medical Education, Dr Rajnish Dubey to all concerned authorities comes after a notice was issued by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to the UP government. A directive was issued to the state, on Monday, seeking a detailed account of the incident, at Rani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi, on March 10, within a period of 4 weeks. The incident was about a patient with a severed leg being made to wait on a stretcher with his leg beneath his head.A probe has been ordered by the state government, after the video of the incident at the college, went viral.

The bodies that received an instructing letter included: State Medical Universities, Principals, Government Medical Colleges and Directors, Vice Chancellors of Medical Research Institutes and the Director, Medical Education and Training,


"The incident at the trauma center of Rani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi on March 10 has hurt the department's image. If the hospital staff had performed their duties properly and followed the assigned protocol of treatment, the incident could have been avoided. All hospitals, medical colleges and research centers in the state will have to ensure that such an incident does not take place again," Dubey said, in a letter dated March 13.

The Principal Secretary clarified that the department will not accommodate such acts of negligence ever again and any similar incident if brought to light, will have the department take the severest of action against the culprits.

His letter stated that chief medical superintendents of institutes will have to keep matters of this kind under their personal supervision.

His letter further stated that events of a similar and serious kind were to be mentioned by medical officials to higher state authorities, including the director of medical education and training.; who in turn was to submit a detailed report on the matter.

The Principal Secretary's letter made a mention of the VC of UP Rural Institute of Medical Sciences and Research at Saifai , Etawah, Lucknow-based director of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, VC of King George's Medical College University, director of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, and Kanpur-based Directors of JK Institute of Cancer and officials of the super specialty child hospital in Noida.

"We have received the directions and will strictly follow them here. Also, we keep organizing seminars and workshops on sensitizing our staff," said principal of Badaun Medical College, Dr RP Singh to TOI.
