UP: 5 new medical colleges to add 500 seats

Agra: With Five district hopitals being up graded by the UP government this year to new medical colleges, 500 additional seats will to be added to the already existing seats from the next academic year .With an increase of a 100 each, in every college, the present number of medical seats will rise to 2700.


The five district hospitals in Basti, Firozabad, Shahjhanpur Bahraich, and Faizabad, to be upgraded, are applying for 100 MBBS seats each this year .All formalities of clearances and inspections by the MCI would be completed before the beginning of academic session of 2018-19.


Director, Medical Education (DME), Dr KK Gupta told the TOI that up gradation work at all the five district hospitals was running on schedule, despite some land acquisition problems faced at a place or two. He was hopeful of meeting the target on time.


SN Medical College , Agra spokesperson, Dr Shailendra Singh informed that Rs 180 crore has been sanctioned by the government for up gradation work for each of the five district hospitals . He said 70% of this amount had been paid by the central government.


The 17 government medical colleges in the state, offer 2199 MBBS seats at present. According to officials, 12 district hospitals are to be upgraded by the government to medical colleges.However, for the time being, the 5 in question are to be attended to. Work on the rest will ensue after completion of the five in question presently.


Additionally, another 2 construction of new medical colleges are to take place in Badaun and Jaunpur districts.


According to sources, Chandauli and Najibabad are also to see two new medical college construction come up in Bijnore district . All the newly constructed colleges are to seek affiliation with the King George’s Medical University(KGMU), Lucknow.
