Thiruvananthapuram medical college to get an AIIMS like trauma Center

Thiruvanathapuram: The Health Minister, K.K. Shylaja recently visited the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College to inspect progress made in the work done for the new trauma care center with modern state of the art facilities on the lines of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). She revealed that it would be functional in six months.


The AIIMS, Emergency Medicine Professor, Dr Sanjeev Boi and Associated Professor, Dr Tej Prakash Sinha accompanied the minister on this inspection tour.


The new trauma care center is coming up near the main entrance of the medical college hospital along the road. The work on the second phase is on its last lap.


The Life 1 Trauma Care Centre along with emergency care department would be housed in the double story building. A Lift and ramp would connect the two floors. The latest diagnostic facilities including X ray, MRI scan, ultra sound scan, and CT Scan, along with other diagnostic services will be available under one roof.


The ground floor will have a reception, triage, surgical ICU, medical ICU, operation theatres, pre operative and post operative rooms, different emergency departments, and an observation room with 80 beds., The new trauma care center will have eight operation theatres in place of the earlier three.


Various specialties including orthopedics, septic operation theatre, surgery procedure room surgery, neurosurgery and ortho procedure room will be part of the new block.


A one way for vehicles coming to the trauma center will be developed on the road adjacent to the existing casualty.


The center will have adequate parking place for ambulances and other emergency rescue vehicles. The medical college with a casualty footfall of 1000 daily will have all the state of the art life-saving facilities


“We are in the process of enhancing the facilities in trauma care centers attached to various hospitals along with ambulances with life-saving facilities. The project is likely to be completed within two years,” she said. The up gradation of the facility is being done keeping in view the rising accident rates of the state, said the Minister.


Minister Shylaja visited AIIMS with a team of doctors, to study the facilities there. Her visit was followed by that of a delegation from AIIMS to MCH, who toured the facilities and discussed the requirements at this Centre.Training in the latest techniques in trauma care was also imparted to a section of doctors and nursing staff.


During her visit, the Health Minister was accompanied by Social Security Mission Executive Director and Trauma Care Nodal Officer, Dr Mohammad Asheel, Medical College Principal, Dr Thomas Mathew, Superintendent, M.S. Sharmad and Deputy Superintendents, Dr Joy John and Dr Santosh Kumar.


27 select government hospitals across Kerala will be provided with trauma care centers, by the state government, to provide expert emergency care to accident victims. These will be besides the following names:




  • General Hospital,

  • Kannur District Hospital

  • Alappuzha Medical College

  • Government Hospitals on National Highways’


“We have also planned to establish trauma care systems in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Thrissur Medical Colleges,” Health Minister, K.K. Shylaja said in reply to a question in the Assembly on Tuesday. The Center state ratio of contribution will be 60: 40


“The approval to include Alappuzha Medical College in the Level-II Trauma Care Project was received from the Centre,” she said. The Centre has also issued an order granting Rs 3.66 crore as the first installment of its share. The total project cost is Rs 10.27 crore.


The approval to include Kozhikode Medical College in Level-I Trauma Care projects has also been secured. “As the first installment of the Centre’s share, the state has received Rs 5.04 crore,” the minister added.


The Centre has a state request to include Thrissur Medical College, too, in the trauma care project plan. “A team from the Centre had visited the medical college on June 17 this year,” Minister Shylaja revealed. A project proposal has already been submitted to the Centre, the Minister added.


“Steps have also been taken to ensure the availability of specialist doctors in these hospitals,” the minister said. Apart from this, first aid and emergency treatment will be will be available in these facilities, along national and state highways with 24X7 casualty service reports Deccan Chronicle.
