Kangra: A major surgical procedure was performed at Dr Rajender Prashad Govt Medical College and Hospital Tanda (Tanda Medical College), recently, wherein the patient was operated for malignant Spindle Cell tumour, involving frontal sinus, left maxillary sinus and left orbit, a senior doctor at the hospital stated.

According to Dr Bhanu Awasthi, Principal at Tanda Medical College, this was a difficult procedure, which was performed in two steps. The first step involved maxillectomy of left side with excision of growth in the left nasal cavity with left infra-orbital margin, left orbit and excavation of left eye, along with facial skin.

He said the first step was performed by Dr Sudesh Kumar, Assistant Professor of ENT Department and his team. The patient was then referred to the Department of Dentistry for Maxillofacial Prosthesis, as part of the second step.

Dr Bhanu said the fabrication of prosthesis was important as after the operation, the patient felt stigmatised, due to the exposed and large facial defect.

Dr Amarjeet Singh, Assistant Professor from the department of dentistry, after examining the patient, planned the fabrication of prosthesis locally.

The fabricated prosthesis was inserted in the defect and the patient was doing well post-surgery.

Dr Awasthi, while congratulating the surgical teams, said that an artificial eye has also been fixed on the patient, thereby not only reducing the cost of this difficult procedure but also bringing in the state-of-the-art healthcare at the patients' doorsteps.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that two departments of Hepatology and Gestrantology would be established soon at the Tanda Medical COllege to strengthen this Medical College to facilitate the patients of the region so that this Medical College could emerge as premier Medical College of the Country.
