Tamil Nadu: Ooty to get its first Government Medical College
Udhagamandalam: A first Government Medical College is likely to come up in Ooty as the directorate of health services proposed the Nilgiris as one of the five districts in the state for the establishment of medical college.
A proposal for the same had already been sent to the state government which will be forwarded to the state finance commission followed by the central finance commission.
It was mentioned as an option it the proposal that the dysfunctional administrative building of Hindustan Photo Film Company (HPF) could be used as the institution.
The institution is estimated to match the infrastructure required to set up a medical college.
The Ooty government headquarters hospital and the maternity ward have the total bed capacity of 450 against the required 300 beds. The land is expanded to 22 acres of land where 15 acres could be the HPF property against the required 20 acres for setting up a government hospital. The distance between the identified property and the Ooty Government Hospital is about 6 km.
The other four proposed districts are Dindigul, Tirupur, Ramanathapuram, and Ariyalur.
Nilgiris, one of the oldest mountain ranges, located at the tri-junction of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. Nilgiris is a part of the Western Ghats. Ooty is a hill station in the state of Tamil Nadu, in southern India. Because of its natural charm and pleasant climate, was a place of Special attraction for the people to choose for the settlement.

In such hilly areas the, the facilities are limited. Therefore, the establishment of the medical college will be a boon to the place.
Dr Ravi Kumar, joint director, Ooty government headquarters hospital told the TOI informed that awareness is the need of the hour. He stated "We can provide serious patients first aid and ask their relatives to take them to the Coimbatore government hospital. However, when a person suffers a heart attack, it's not possible to give him specialised care within the 'golden hour'.
