The Medical Council had this year disapproved the additional 50 seats granted to the KMCT Karakonam-CSI medical colleges. The college management approached the High Court and received a judgment in its favor
New Delhi: The additional 50 MBBS seats to be allotted to the KMCT Medical College granted by a high court order have been put a stay on by the apex court. The SC stay comes in the face of the petition filed by the Medical Council of India against the High Court order.
The petition is to come up for hearing on Wednesday.
The court was critical of the college management demand for an urgent hearing of the petition saying that such urgencies created a pressure on the court proceedings.
The Medical Council had this year disapproved the additional 50 seats granted to the KMCT Karakonam-CSI medical colleges.
The college management approached the High Court and received a judgment in its favor, reports Kaimudi Online.
KMCT Medical College established in the year 2008 with an intake of 100 MBBS seats has the Medical Council of India approval. The College is affiliated with Kerala University of Health Sciences. The MBBS course was accorded central government approval in the year 2013. Postgraduate courses were started in the academic year 2015-16 in Orthopaedics & Pharmacology with an annual intake of one and two respectively. 2016-17, saw an increase in the intake of students in MBBS course from 100 to 150 the Central Government approving it.
The Medical College is attached to KMCT Medical College Hospital, which is a tertiary level multispecialty hospital with more than 650 beds.
KMCT Medical College of Kerala had earlier moved the Supreme Court, challenging the constitutionality of the nativity-based criterion for determining the eligibility of candidates for the purpose of admission.
The petition was soon withdrawn when the bench of Justice L Nageswara Rao and Justice Mohan M Shantanagoudar was not inclined to interfere.
