Students Beware: MK Shah Medical College under No admission Category for 2018-19

Ahmedabad: MK Shah Medical College and Research Centre, Ahmedabad have been placed under the 'no admission category' by the Medical Council of India(MCI) for its 2nd batch, undergraduate course of 150 students, for the year 2018-19.

The Council decision has been taken on the basis of the assessment report submitted after an inspection was carried out on September 26 and 27, this year. The report points to faculty shortages, infrastructural lacunae, low bed occupancy, shortage of equipment and furniture as well as staff quarters.

In a letter to the union government, the MCI called for disapproval of renewal permission for MBBS courses for the academic year 2018-19.

The Council’s inspection report mentioned the college to have 6.4% fewer faculty members, with the departments of Forensic Medicine, Microbiology, Pathology, Community Medicine, Pharmacology, and the college examination hall still being under construction.

The report also observed that the bed occupancy in the affiliated hospital on the day of the inspection was an all-time low at 32.6% at 10 am, as against the expected 50%.

The central photography section has also been found to be ill-equipped both in terms of staff and equipment; with half the rooms also lying unfurnished, the report added. It further spoke of staff quarters falling short of 4 as against the required 20.

The MCI committee stated in no uncertain terms that since the teaching faculty was not beyond 30% and bed occupancy less than the called for 50%, compliance of rectification of deficiencies from the college could not be looked into.However, the Council had received a compliance report from the said college.

The Gujarat University officials also made a mention of MK Shah Medical College being managed by Sumandeep Trust, whose founder trustee Mansukh Shah was arrested for accepting a bribe.

The university officials revealed that the government would consider adjusting the 150 first batch students of MK Shah, elsewhere, as it stood guarantor for the institution. The government had in the past also been forced to accommodate a section of students in other colleges, reports TOI.

His unusual ways of fleecing students not only involved selling of seats, but also marks; However, Mr. Shah gave medical aspirants marks in accordance with the price paid for them, claimed the sleuths. In some situations, he even forced them to buy off marks from him.
