1st year MBBS dropout arrested for posing as doctor, treating patients

Mangaluru: In yet another incident of impersonation, a first-year MBBS drop out has been arrested by the police for allegedly treating the patients in two hospitals by posing as a doctor.

The matter came to light when the accused student visited the Yenepoya Medical College, Derlakatte on December 29, 2019, at midnight. When the security guards of the hospital tried to stop him, he introduced himself as an assistant to the consulting urologist practising at the hospital. He said that he is visiting the hospital to see some patients at the private ward.

Once in the hospital premises, he called the on-duty nurse and asked for the case details of the patients. After the nurse provided him with the case details he examined the two female patients and wrote the prescription for them. He even shouted at the on-duty nurse for not doing her work seriously. When he left the premises after some time, the nurse started to doubt the whole act. She then informed the hospital authorities about the same following which a data check was done and it was found that the accused was not a real doctor.

Hospital authorities immediately warned all staff members and the nearby hospitals about the matter. The accused was caught when he again tried to sneak into the hospital. 

The hospital administration, this time, ready to apprehend the accused had already informed the security guards and had directed to let him enter the premises which they did when he came. However, when he asked for the consultant urologist on reception, he realized that he was in a trap and immediately tried to run from the spot but a security guard caught him. 

Subsequently, the police registered a complaint against the accused and started the interrogation wherein they found that the accused was a first-year MBBS drop out from the medical college. He discontinued studies after the first year due to personal reasons. In the meantime, the intention of the accused by sneaking into hospitals is still not clear. 

Speaking on the incident, Dr Padmanabha informed TOI, "He used to roam around with his friend in a car. He was also involved in a similar incident at a private hospital in Kankanady, and the same has been informed to the police. He visited hospitals in a car, which has been seized by police," Dr Padmanabha informed TOI.
