State complies to Madras High Court order of 142 MBBS student transfers

The Madras High Court’s order passed on December 22 for transfer of 144 students of Annai Medical College and Hospital Pennalur in Sriperumbudur to any of the 22 government medical colleges in the State has been adhered to by the state authorities and the decision regarding the same given to the court.


The government also conveyed its decision of not going into appeal against the order passed by the court to Justice N. Kirubakaran and of having forwarded the proposal on December 29. After recording the submission made by Special Government Pleader T.M. Pappaiah, the judge said a good word for Advocate-General Vijay Narayan for having persuaded the government to accept the order keeping in mind student interest.


During the video-conference hearing from the High Court Bench in Madurai, advocate V.P. Raman, representing MCI, informed the court that the State Government ‘s proposal was received by the Council on Monday. “We would comply with the court order and take a decision on the proposal within a week,” he stated.


The hearing on MCI’s decision in the matter was adjourned to January 10.


Meanwhile, in the matter related to the dispute arisen between the old management and new management of Annai Medical College over recovery of first-year fee arrears to the tune of Rs. 23 lakh from 15 students, the judge ordered that the money is deposited in a bank account to the credit of the case pending in the court reports the Hindu.


On the issue of the return of around Rs.15 lakh to some of the students related to aid provided by the State government to first-generation graduates, the judge said a decision would be taken later. Immediately after depositing of Rs.23 lakh in the bank account, the college was given directions to issue transfer certificate and return all other documents including original mark sheets obtained from the students during the time of admissions.


Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the Madras High Court ordered the transfer of 142 students of a now-defunct private medical college to 22 government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu.

Justice N Kirubakaran passed the order on a batch of pleas moved by students of Annai Medical College and Hospital Pennalur, Sriperumbudur, seeking their transfer.
